I understand windows is still allowing free upgrades to win 10. it says from win 7 or 8 but im still running xp, but i figured ill give it a shot. xp is so old and not supported anymore that they probably didn't list it because who still uses it (this guy). So i downloaded all the files needed to do it

Yes, I had the same. A clean install of 11 Home in a VM was activated by changing the installed key to a W7 Home CoA key I had to hand. Whether that would work if the CoA had previously been used to activate an install (of W7 or 10) is another question. I know for certain that the key I used had never been used before.
